Building societies continue mortgage boom

Posted on 28 Apr, 2007

Latest figures from the Building Societies Association (BSA) show the housing market boom of 2006 continued strongly into 2007.

January lending figures showed a number of record highs as lending and approval amounts were upped by almost a third compared to last year.

Gross mortgage advances from building societies rose from £3,174 million in January 2006 to £4,062 this year, while approvals grew from £2,908 to £4,199 for 2007.

"Building society gross lending was the highest January figure on record, as were approvals," commented Andrew Gall, business economist at BSA.

"Indications of a slowing market are not coming through in building society mortgage figures yet. This is a reflection of the strong numbers of loans promised but not processed, seen at the end of last year."

The housing market is expected to slow later in 2007 as the impact of three interest rate rises in quick succession filters through.
